05 Jan Potato Growing in a Deep Underground Mine?
Finnish newspaper Maaseudun Tulevaisuus has published an article describing plans to use the soon to be closed underground mine in Pyhäjärvi, Finland for potato growing. Local development company and Natural Resources Institute Finland are planning projects to introduce hydroponic growing in the depths of the mine. The products would be valuable plant components and for example high value potatoes.
Pyhäsalmi mine, operated by First Quantum Minerals, is the deepest working underground mine in Europe with lowest level below 1400 m.
