Natural Resources Institute Finland has released preliminary statistics on cultivated acreage in Finland. The statistics show a slight increase in potato acreage from 22100 to 22300 hectares. However, potato acreage for consumption and food industry continues to decline whereas acreage for starch industry increases. Consumption potatoes and food industry combined make up 14100 ha, which shows a decline of 300 ha from last year. The same figures for starch industry are 6500 ha this year and 6100 last year....

Up here in the north we are late in starting our potato season, but now it has officially begun. Next week the volumes are still limited, but good quantities are expected for the week before midsummer festivities. Newest estimates from Central Europe suggest that the potato crop as well as other vegetables are going to be about two weeks late when compared to an average year. In Finland continuous rain has also halted planting of potato. This might result in later than average crop. However, the arctic summer can surprise us many times before harvesting....
